Understanding and Treating Anxiety in Bereavement

Understanding and Treating Anxiety in Bereavement
Type: Webinar
Presenter: Terri Rando

Despite evidence suggesting that anxiety is the preeminent emotion in acute grief, it remains a seriously underappreciated element in the aftermath of loss. The focus is often on other emotions, such as depression, anger, or guilt, and there seems to be little awareness of the critical role it plays in catalyzing mourning processes. This is unfortunate since anxiety is often a significant concern for the bereaved and can create many problems, whether such anxiety is at "normal" levels (as found in uncomplicated acute grief) or rises to the level of post-traumatic distress (as found after traumatic deaths). This webinar will explain the critical role of anxiety in bereavement, examine its forms and impacts, and outline strategies for effective intervention.

Learning Outcomes:

After participating in this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • identify the functional role of anxiety after death of a loved one,
  • delineate the six sets of issues provoking anxiety in acute grief,
  • list at least three intervention strategies in each of the four areas anxiety manifests itself - physiological, psychological, social and behavioural.
