Telephone Counselling

Telephone Counselling
Type: Workshop Brisbane, Queensland
Presenter: Anita Hoare

Overview

It is often assumed that telephone counselling is the poor relation of face-to-face counselling and that no real support can be obtained over the phone. There are many who believe that without eye contact and the ability to ‘see’ the non-verbal cues of the bereaved, effective support is unachievable. This belief has caused many support workers to fear the phone and minimise the many benefits that can be obtained from offering bereavement support in this manner. However, there are many benefits to clients in accessing telephone support, which may include: convenience, accessibility, affordability and the opportunity for further anonymity.

This workshop will explore the concept that effective bereavement support can be offered over the telephone and participants will learn the different skills required to move from face-to-face support to telephone support.

Designed for

Professionals working with clients experiencing grief and bereavement, such as community support workers, counsellors, therapists, psychologists, social workers, pastoral care workers, palliative care workers and other allied health professionals who are offering grief and loss support to clients over the phone.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  •  understand the theoretical principles of telephone counselling,
  •  describe the benefits of telephone counselling in supporting the bereaved,
  •  identify and implement effective strategies to support grieving individuals over the telephone,
  • offer grief support across a number of sessions over the telephone,
  •  understand when to refer clients to specialist grief and bereavement services for ongoing support.
