Suicide Prevention Awareness Network Bendigo
March 12, 2012
Bendigo will host a major suicide awareness walk on March 24 2012. A Suicide Prevention Awareness Network (SPAN) Central Victoria group has been developed to plan the walk through central Bendigo. The walk will culminate with an official ceremony, lunch and performance by musicians, including the Victoria Police Pipe Band.
SPAN (Suicide Prevention Awareness Network) began in Geelong about three years ago, when a young man took his life at a young age; this coincided with a number of other youth suicides in that area. Several mothers linked together and arranged the first walk in 2010 on Australia Day. Since then the SPAN has grown where some 1.400 people walk to remember and to highlight the tragedy of the loss of lives to suicide.
People who walk at these events feel that they are not alone and in isolation, it helps to see that others too feel the sadness and grief when a loved one dies in this way.
The Bendigo Span takes place for the first time on Saturday March 24th and so we invite you to walk or share the information
