Vale, Karen Spehr

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the death of the founding CEO of the Centre for Grief Education, the precursor organisation of the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement, Karen Spehr (Curnow).

It was some twenty-five years ago that Karen, in her role as a psychologist at the Peninsula Hospice in Frankston developed a bereavement support program for widows, which subsequently developed into a VicHealth-funded bereavement project. This project resulted in a proposal for the establishment of a Grief Education Centre which was later funded by the Department of Health. Some of you may have had the opportunity to meet Karen when ACGB celebrated its twentieth anniversary at the 2016 ACGB Conference.

Karen's significant contribution to supporting bereaved people and to developing the skills of those who support them is part of her lasting legacy.
