The Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement (ACGB) is the largest provider of grief and bereavement education in Australia.
The 22271VIC Certificate IV in Bereavement Support is a specialised online course developed by ACGB for palliative care staff, nurses, aged care workers, social workers, teachers, counsellors, funeral, cemetery and crematoria workers and other health professionals who wish to obtain the skills and knowledge required to assist people suffering grief and bereavement.
This course will strengthen the practice skills and knowledge of those already working in, or seeking to work in, settings providing services to people who have experienced significant grief, loss and bereavement.

With 11 compulsory core units completed within 12 months, the 22271VIC Certificate IV in Bereavement Support offers a holistic approach to industry activities. While bereavement care and support work are the focus of the course, the content also incorporates communication, capacity building, and quality management as required in real workplace environment.
The Certificate IV in Bereavement Support is delivered in 11 core units that explore and enable participants to develop in the following areas:
- How to provide effective bereavement support
- Providing culturally sensitive bereavement support
- Understanding the needs of special groups
- An understanding and application of basic counselling skills, including emphatic listening and non verbal communication
- Application of theoretical principals of grief and loss
- Capacity building and Quality Management for real workplace environments
Units of competency
Industry driven teaching
The Certificate IV in Bereavement Support is an industry driven program with competency-based training.
Students who have previously completed any of the units imported from existing training packages can apply for credit transfer and be exempt from having to undertake those units.
Recognition of prior learning and GAP training
Prospective students with significant industry or workplace experience are encouraged to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), thus shortening the length of course and reducing the course fees.
Given the course is equivalent to a 6-month full time training or can complete the course part time in 12 months; and is approved by the Department of Human Services, students may be eligible for Centrelink payment while undertaking this course.
