Online Short Course Overview: Loss and Grief relating to Ability, Ageing and Dementia

When a family member is diagnosed with a form of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, it’s likely that the losses have already begun some time before. Stretching ahead of family members and the person themselves is an uncertain future littered with loss and grief that both comes and goes and comes and stays.

This online short course will take participants through an exploration of the many facets of grief experienced by those affected by decrease in abilities, increase in age and/or dementia. We will consider the different needs of both the families/carers and the person themselves. Strategies will be offered to help people who support these families to engage in an active grieving process that acknowledges the losses experienced and the life of their loved one.

Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this online short course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the varied losses associated with a decrease in abilities and increases in ageing and/or dementia.
• Apply grief and loss theory to implement support for family members affected by disability, ageing and/or dementia
• Analyse strategies that allow active engagement with the grief experienced by individuals with decreasing abilities, increased ageing and/or dementia.
• Evaluate some simple communication tools to be able to work directly with individuals who are living with dementia and acknowledge their grief. 

Course Structure:
 
The structure of this online short course is self-paced learning.
 
Within the course, you will find four pre-recorded modules that go for roughly an hour each.
These are to be watched in your own time within the four week period.

The only set time which forms part of the course is the one-hour live Zoom Q&A in the last week of the course.
The timing of this will be provided upon course commencement.

More information including your login for LearnBook (online course platform) will be sent a few days prior to the course starting.
You will then have access to the platform, so you can make yourself familiar with it, ready for the modules to launch on the course commencement date.

Assessment: 

Students will need to engage with each module and complete the learning opportunities along the way. Whilst no formal assessment is required to complete the course, students will be required to score an average of 80% or above in the multiple choice quizzes to receive a certificate of completion to claim the 10 OPD points offered by the ACA.

You will be required to complete the end of course survey to receive your Certificate of Completion.
 
Trainer Bio: Margaret Sealey

Margaret Sealey (PhD) is a Counsellor, educator, researcher and thanatologist who has worked with vulnerable populations in health settings (palliative care and oncology in particular) for 20 years. During this time she worked at various hospices, the Cancer Council WA, Motor Neurone Disease WA and Alzheimer’s Australia WA supporting clients and family members facing life limiting illness and dementia.

With a previous background as a registered Nurse, she has undertaken a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) and postgraduate studies in Counselling. Her PhD research developed a bereavement risk assessment model for use in palliative care using action research.

Margaret is Certified in Thanatology: Death, Dying and Bereavement, a member of the Association of Death Education & Counselling (ADEC), the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement (ACGB), and Palliative Care WA (PCWA). She is a member of the Australian Psychological Society (MAPS), the Australian Counselling Association (ACA), and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), providing education in grief, loss and dementia to people affected by loss as well as the workforce sector. Presently she is a lecturer in the Discipline of Counselling at Murdoch University.

• Non-Members: $345

Extensions and Intake Transfers

Extensions and Intake Transfers will not be granted to students that cannot complete their course before the conclusion date. If the course is not completed, students will forgo their registration fee in full.

Extensions beyond the course conclusion date will only be granted to those who can provide a medical certificate stating that they were medically unfit to complete the course.
 
Cancellation and Refund Policy: Participants must agree to this policy prior to commencing the course:

A refund may be given if:

• The student is enrolled in a course and the course is cancelled due to insufficient student numbers.
• The student advises the ACGB in writing that they are withdrawing from the course 14 days prior to course commencing.
• If a refund is requested less than 14 days before course commencement, a full refund, less a $50 administration fee will be paid.

No refund is available to a student who leaves the course before finishing it.
