Short Course Overview: Supporting those bereaved by Suicide

The issue of suicide continues to raise feelings of fear, doubt and confusion (among other feelings) in our society. Research indicates that people bereaved through suicide are at greater risk of suicide themselves. In contrast to this, many people bereaved through suicide become the greatest advocates for suicide prevention strategies in our community.

This Online Short Course will lead participants through a brief history of how our society has responded to suicide and consider the ways in which this influences how we respond to the needs of those bereaved through suicide today. The notion of effective grief and bereavement support as a suicide prevention strategy will be explored, with strategies offered to re-enforce this idea. This short course will engage participants in understanding the particular issues and questions that arise for those bereaved through suicide and the ways in which they can be addressed.

Learning Modules: At the conclusion of this online short course, participants will be able to:

Describe the ways in which our society has historically responded to suicide and the influence of these responses on the suicide bereaved
Identify and describe the range of issues, questions and experiences that face the suicide bereaved
Identify effective support strategies for, and resources that can be used by, those bereaved through suicide
Utilise an understanding of suicide and suicide bereavement to inform effective grief and bereavement support and suicide  prevention strategies for the suicide bereaved

Course Structure:

The structure of this course is self-paced learning.

Within the course, you will find four pre-recorded modules that go for roughly an hour each.
These are to be watched in your own time within the four-week period.

The only set time which forms part of the course is the one-hour live Zoom Q&A in the last week of the course.
The timing of this will be provided upon course commencement.

More information including your login for LearnBook (online course platform) will be sent a few days prior to the course starting.
You will then have access to the platform, so you can make yourself familiar with it, ready for the modules to launch on the course commencement date.

Assessment:

Students will need to engage with each module and complete the learning opportunities along the way. Whilst no formal assessment is required to complete the course, students will be required to score an average of 80% or above in the multiple choice quizzes to receive a certificate of completion to claim the 10 OPD points offered by the ACA.
