Short Course Overview: How to Facilitate a Bereavement Support Group

Leading a support group can be a rewarding and a positive growth experience, however, it can also be very challenging. Support groups are among the best and most popular approaches to empowering and connecting people. 

This Online Short Course is designed for those working or intending to lead and facilitate support groups for those experiencing grief or loss.

Learning Modules: at the Conclusion of this Short Course, participants should be able to:

Understand theories and practices that are useful when working with bereaved people
Gain an overview of group work, theory and practice
Analyse the framework for setting up a bereavement support group
Review a structured template to run effective bereavement support groups using grief theories and models 


Students will need to engage with each module and complete the learning opportunities along the way. Whilst no formal assessment is required to complete the course, students will be required to score an average of 80% or above in the multiple-choice quizzes to receive a certificate of completion to claim the 7 OPD hours offered by the ACA.

You will be required to complete the end of course survey to receive your Certificate of Completion.
Trainer Bio: Jackie Tarabay

Jackie Tarabay is a Specialist Bereavement Counsellor, Clinical Supervisor, Trainer and Groups Coordinator at the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement (ACGB). Jackie provides individual counselling to children, adolescents and adults and has years of experience coordinating various support groups, including the facilitation of the Kids Grieve Too (KG2) program. Jackie also creates and delivers workshops, programs and customised training.

Jackie’s therapeutic philosophy toward grief and loss is based on a client lead approach where every person is seen as unique, grieving in their own way and their own time. Jackie focuses on the core qualities of genuineness, empathy and unconditional positive regard in supporting the bereaved. Jackie advocates creating a safe, compassionate and non-judgmental environment to help integrate loss in a way that is both effective and personal. 

Jackie has presented talks at the ACGB National Conference, Australasian Cemetery and Crematorium Association (ACCA), and Good Life Good Death Expo and was a member of the focus group for Palliative Care Australia (PCA). Jackie’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Counselling, a Master Practitioner Certificate in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), a Diploma of Shamanic Studies, Clinical Supervision and a Cert IV in Training and Assessment. Jackie also has studied in a host of other areas including psychotherapy, grief and loss, drama and personal development.

Trainer Bio: Jo Baker

Jo Baker is a Registered Nurse (RGN) and Midwife (DipMid) and is a Specialist Bereavement Counsellor and Support Group Coordinator at the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement.

Jo completed a Diploma of counselling in 2015, the GCBCI in 2017 and the Internship program through ACGB in 2018. Her current experience is with face to face, telephone and online counselling at ACGB and she has a passion for using ACT strategies and Narrative therapies in the area of grief and loss. Jo has volunteered at PANDA (The Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Association) in Melbourne and has experience in the areas of Women’s mental health and Community Education. The current support group’s she runs through ACGB are Death of a Parent, Younger Bereaved Partner’s and Coffee and Chat.

Members: $295
Non-Members: $345

Extensions and Intake Transfers

Extensions and Intake Transfers will not be granted to students that cannot complete their course before the conclusion date. If the course is not completed, students will forgo their registration fee in full.

Extensions beyond the course conclusion date will only be granted to those who can provide a medical certificate stating that they were medically unfit to complete the course.
Cancellation and Refund Policy: Participants must agree to this policy prior to commencing the course:

A refund may be given if:

The student is enrolled in a course and the course is cancelled due to insufficient student numbers.
The student advises the ACGB in writing that they are withdrawing from the course 14 days prior to course commencing.
If a refund is requested less than 14 days before course commencement, a full refund, less a $50 administration fee will be paid.
No refund is available to a student who leaves the course before finishing it.
