Short Course Overview: Effective Brief Contact and Single Session Grief Support

Many community support and health care professionals may only have brief contact, or sometimes just a single session, with individuals experiencing grief or bereavement.
Research tells us that a large percentage of bereaved individuals will be able to live with their grief with minimal support from professionals. However, it is acknowledged that complications and difficulties may occur over time if the bereaved individual has not had timely access to sound, basic information about the nature of grief, and how to identify when to be concerned for the wellbeing of themselves and others.

Effective bereavement support can be offered or initiated via brief contact or a single session, without compromising the quality of the support given. This short course is aimed at community support staff and health care workers who have contact with bereaved and grieving individuals, even though their primary role may not be in the field of grief and bereavement. 

This short course will offer a simple framework and strategies that can be used to ensure effective bereavement support when only having brief contact with bereaved or grieving individuals.

Learning Modules: at the Conclusion of this Short Course, participants should be able to:

Explore the grief experience for individuals using contemporary grief and bereavement theories/models
Understand and deliver the basics of grief education by identifying common grief reactions, what to do and when to be concerned
Identify strategies and resources that assist people who are grieving and can be addressed briefly
Understand when to refer to specialist grief and bereavement services for ongoing support

Assessment: 

Students will need to engage with each module and complete the learning opportunities along the way. Whilst no formal assessment is required to complete the course, students will be required to score an average of 80% or above in the multiple choice quizzes to receive a certificate of completion to claim the 7 OPD hours offered by the ACA.
 

Trainer Bio: Anita Hoare

Anita has a Masters in Counselling and Human Services from La Trobe University, a Masters in Social Work from Federation University and a Graduate Certificate in Bereavement Counselling from the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement, with whom she currently works as a trainer and assessor. She is a Certified Bereavement Practitioner, a registered educator and clinical supervisor. She is training to be a supervisor for Lifeline.  She has experience with individuals using face-to-face, telephone and Skype sessions.

Amongst her areas of specialisation are grief and bereavement counselling with specific expertise in Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT).  She trained in CGT with Dr M. Katherine Shear, at the Centre for Complicated Grief, Columbia University in New York. She was there for 3 months in 2016, which provided her with a unique learning experience and higher level of familiarity using this protocol.

She is also trained in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy, a 16-session protocol for anxiety and depression. This is an efficacious treatment widely practised in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom.

She is a member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA), PACFA, AASW and the Loss and Grief Practitioners’ Association.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: Participants must agree to this policy prior to commencing the course:

A refund may be given if:

The student is enrolled in a course and the course is cancelled due to insufficient student numbers.
The student advises the ACGB in writing that they are withdrawing from the course 14 days prior to course commencing.
If a refund is requested less than 14 days before course commencement, a full refund, less a $50 administration fee will be paid.

No refund is available to a student who leaves the course before finishing it.
