This presentation describes disenfranchised grief as grief that is not openly acknowledged, socially sanctioned, or publicly mourned. The presentation explores the contexts and causes of disenfranchised grief as well as complications arising from disenfranchisement. The webinar will emphasise the cultural factors that can disenfranchise grief. A strong emphasis of the presentation is on interventive strategies that can enfranchise grief. 

Learning Outcomes

Following this webinar participants will:

  • Define disenfranchised grief, discuss causes of disenfranchisement, and describe five contexts of disenfranchised grief
  • Discuss ways that disenfranchisement complicates the process of mourning
  • Describe interventive strategies that are effective with disenfranchised grievers
  • Discuss the cost of enfranchising disenfranchised grievers

 

Presenter Biography

Dr. Kenneth J. Doka is a Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of the College of New Rochelle and Senior Consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America. A prolific auther, Dr. Doka has authored or edited over 40 books and over 100 articles and book chapters. Dr. Doka is editor of both Omega: The Journal of Death and Dying and Journeys: A Newsletter to Help in Bereavement. He has authored two books on disenfranchised grief.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

The Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement reserves the right to cancel education programs that do not achieve minimum participation, in which case all fees will be refunded.

Registration cancellations will not be accepted unless made in writing to the centre. Cancellations made more than thirty (30) days prior to the event date will be refunded less 25% of the registration fee to cover administration costs.

No registration refunds will be made after this date. Please note: The full invoiced amount will still be payable in the event of non-attendance on the day.
