Grief Integration Through the Use of Borrowed Narratives

Grief Integration Through the Use of Borrowed Narratives

Webinar Overview

This webinar is free for ACGB members

Some individuals, isolated in grief, conclude, "No one understands what I am experiencing!" or "No one has ever experienced grief like mine!" What in the grief experience and tragedies of public figures, celebrities, heroes, ordinary people has transferable value?

After shipwrecks, bushfires, wars, heat waves, Australians have emerged resiliently. What stories do survivors of personal and national tragedies have to tell? The presenter contends that unexamined griefs of Australians offer raw material to be refined and shaped into resources which will make a difference in clinical encounters with contemporary grievers committed to meaning-making and future-making.

A borrowed narrative is more than a string of interesting "facts." The clinician interacts with the narrative to ask, "What have we here that might be helpful?" And the clinical explores the narrative with the griever.

For example, what fresh insights may result in reexamining the sinking of the hospital ship, AHS Centaur and the loss of 268 lives during World War II? What grief did the survivors experience? What might they have to say to us today?

Using borrowed narratives helps grievers conclude: My grief counts! And my experience of grief may help another griever.
