Workshop Overview:
How to facilitate Bereavement Support Groups

Leading a support group can be a rewarding and a positive growth experience, however, it can also be very challenging. Support groups are among the best and most popular approaches to empowering and connecting people. 

This workshop is designed for those working or intending to lead and facilitate support groups for those experiencing grief or loss.

Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Gain an overview of groupwork, theory and practice
Understand theories and practices that are useful when working with bereaved people
Develop skills in how to facilitate bereavement support groups though experiential learning 
Gain an understanding of how to screen, structure and evaluate the group process

The Presenters: Sharon Paetzold and Jo Baker

Sharon Paetzold

BSW(Hons), GradDipMentalHealth.,Dip.Gestalt Th., Supervisor (CEP), Cert.IV Ed.& Training. ACSW(Clinical), MHSW(Acc), ANZMHA.
Sharon is a clinical social worker with substantial experience in child, adolescent and family psychiatry, primary health care, child and family services, family violence and sexual assault services including educational and tertiary services for over 28 years. Sharon works as a mental health practitioner, gestalt therapist, somatic trauma therapist, certified trainer & supervisor in private practice. Sharon's interests include complex trauma, post-traumatic stress disorders, chronic illnesses, grief and loss issues and suicidality. 

Jo Baker
Registered Nurse (RGN) and Midwife (DipMid) and is a Specialist Bereavement Counsellor and Support Group Coordinator at the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement.
Jo completed a Diploma of counselling in 2015, the GCBCI in 2017 and the Internship program through ACGB in 2018. Her current experience is with face to face, telephone and online counselling at ACGB and she has a passion for using ACT strategies and Narrative therapies in the area of grief and loss. Jo has volunteered at PANDA (The Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Association) in Melbourne and has experience in the areas of Women’s mental health and Community Education. The current support group’s she runs through ACGB are Death of a Parent, Younger Bereaved Partner’s and Coffee and Chat.

ACGB is pleased to announce that we now have an early bird price point available for our remaining workshops in 2019. We have decided to introduce early bird pricing to make our workshops more accessible for those in the industry. 

Early Bird Pricing: 

  • $295.00 for ACGB Members 
  • $340.00 for non members

*These prices will end two weeks before the date of the workshop. After this date the regular pricing will be applied.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

The Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement reserves the right to cancel education programs that do not achieve minimum participation, in which case all fees will be refunded.
Registration cancellations will not be accepted unless made in writing to the centre. Cancellations made more than thirty (30) days prior to the event date will be refunded less 25% of the registration fee to cover administration costs. 
No registration refunds will be made after this date. Please note: The full invoiced amount will still be payable in the event of non-attendance on the day.
