September Intake: Supporting Those Bereaved By Suicide

Online Workshop Overview

When someone dies by suicide, it can adversely impact the physical, emotional, and social outcomes of those surrounding them, including family, friends, and the community. Although grief is experienced and expressed individually, there are often distinct features related to a death by suicide that can complicate the grieving experience. On top of these experiences, suicide is a reportable death and will go through legal proceedings. This can be a complex and unfamiliar process for families.

This workshop aims to support and assist workers in responding and understanding the broad range of reactions to a death by suicide. Students will learn knowledge of the coronial process and effective communication strategies that can support those who are grieving. The workshop will hold discussions, activities and allow for an interactive learning environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding historical and current societal response to suicide and how this may impact on the bereaved.
  • Connect with your own views and values around suicide and identify strategies on how to support self while supporting the bereaved.
  • Identify and understand effective strategies to support those grieving after a death by suicide.
  • Increased awareness of the Coronial Process to be able to support your clients in understanding the system.
