Overview

Violent or traumatic deaths bring a range of complex reactions, which can vary widely from individual to individual. Strong physical, cognitive and emotional reactions are common, with the social world of the bereaved also affected. Engagement with law enforcement agencies and the legal system brings its own challenges, along with media attention in many cases. Attendees at this workshop can expect to engage in a discussion of these complex issues and explore the most effective ways to provide support and assistance to the bereaved, while being mindful of the impact on the support worker themselves.


Designed For

Professionals working with people who are experiencing grief as a result of a violent or traumatic death, such as social workers, teachers, chaplains, counsellors, nurses, therapists, psychologists and other allied health professionals.


Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
 

• explore current grief and loss theories
• understand and be able to offer simple techniques for managing strong emotions
• be aware of role definition and boundaries as a support worker when working with violent and traumatic deaths
• develop an understanding of the complex needs of those bereaved through violent and traumatic death
• increase confidence in working with individuals affected by these issues.

Presenter Profile
Simon Pont
Simon is a social worker, counsellor and clinical supervisor at Empowered Life Counselling. He is an experienced grief and bereavement counsellor and is a former Manager of the Counselling Unit, Forensic Medicine University of Newcastle (UON). The Unit piloted a child and young persons bereavement program and as a result was a finalist in the NSW Health Innovation Awards. 

Simon is the Conjoint Lecturer with the University of Newcastle, and lectures at the University of New England.

As a Clinical Supervisor, Simon supervises professionals and students in the health and community sector.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

The Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement reserves the right to cancel education programs that do not achieve minimum participation, in which case all fees will be refunded.

Registration cancellations will not be accepted unless made in writing to the centre. Cancellations made more than thirty (30) days prior to the event date will be refunded less 25% of the registration fee to cover administration costs. 

No registration refunds will be made after this date. Please note: The full invoiced amount will still be payable in the event of non-attendance on the day.
