Webinar Overview

Complicated Spiritual Grief: Understanding and Assessing Spiritual Crisis Following Loss

For many bereaved individuals, faith, religion, and spirituality prove supportive and comforting following the loss of a loved one. For others who are grieving, the opposite holds true. Complicated spiritual grief (CSG) is a spiritual crisis following the loss of a loved one in relation to God/and or the mourner's spiritual community. CSG has been shown to exacerbate the bereavement experience for some spiritually inclined grievers. To assess CSG in bereaved adults, a simple-to-use multidimensional measure of spiritual crisis following loss called the Inventory of Complicated Spiritual Grief 2.0 (ICSG 2.0) was developed, validated, and is now being used in both clinical research settings.

The ICSG 2.0 was derived using narrative data from individual research participants and focus groups which revealed 17 specific theme relative to CSG that were not found on the original ICSG. Specifically, participants' overarching narrative was one of resentment and doubt towards God, dissatisfaction with the spiritual support received, and substantial changes in their spiritual beliefs and behaviours following loss. Given the abundance of newly derived knowledge, and the well-substantiated related between CSG and deleterious bereavement outcomes, especially for traumatically bereaved individuals, an enlarged and improved scale was warranted and deemed clinically critical. The measure's clinical and research utility will be discussed, as well as examples of CSG from participants' lived experiences.

This webinar will be most useful for Mental health professionals, clergy, spiritual leaders, grief therapists.
