New Australian journal on grief and bereavement

Grief Matters: The Australian Journal of Grief and Bereavement will be launched by Ms. Geraldine Doogue (journalist and ABC presenter) on Tuesday, 28 April 1998 at the Knox Lecture Theatre, Theological College (Corpus Christi), Bayview Avenue, Clayton, at 3.00 p.m.

Speaking at the launch will be Professor Beverley Raphael, Director Centre for Mental Health - NSW Health Department, academic, author and clinician. "Grief is not a disease. Major contributions have been made by Australian researchers in taking forward the frontiers of understanding in the field of grief and bereavement," says Professor Raphael.

The launch will acknowledge that this day also marks the second anniversary of the murder of 35 people at Port Arthur.

Articles in the journal will represent excellent Australian research initiatives contributing to the scientific study of bereavement, its phenomena and outcomes. The first issue deals with grief within families, the grief of older men and the experience of grief. Forthcoming issues will cover such themes as aboriginal grief and loss, loss and the migrant experience, disability and mental health, traumatic loss, children and grief and gender issues.

The journal is published by the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement and encompasses both academic and applied aspects of grief and bereavement.

While distinctively Australian in flavour, the journal will also include content from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and South-East Asia.
