Third
Annual Grief Lecture
to
be held on Thursday 12 June 2003
The loss and grief issues faced by prisoners and their families
The Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement is delighted to announce that the Third Annual Grief
Lecture will be presented
by Judith Lazarus, Chief Executive Officer of the The Victorian Association
for The Care and Resettlement of Offenders.
For the past 10 years Judith Lazarus has been the Chief Executive
Officer of The Victorian Association for The Care and Resettlement
of Offenders
(VACRO), and has worked with the organisation for the past 17 years.
She has qualifications in Social Sciences and Human Service Administration
and started her work with VACRO in a Family Liaison position in D Division,
Pentridge.
In this lecture, Judith will share her observations and insights
into the loss and grief issues faced by prisoners and their families.
Drawing
upon Doing It Hard: A Study Of The Needs Of Children And Families
Of Prisoners In Victoria, published by VACRO in 2000, she will discuss
the difficulties faced by children who have a parent in jail. Judith
Lazarus brings a unique perspective from which to reflect upon and
examine losses resulting from a term of imprisonment.
Following her work in Pentridge, Judith moved to the then new Melbourne
Remand Centre (now the Melbourne Assessment Prison), where she again
represented VACRO in a Family Liaison role. She remained working in
the prison for four years prior to commencing in the CEO’s position.
Judith’s work has taken her into many prisons where she has worked
directly with prisoners and in the community with ex-prisoners and
their families.
In 1998 Judith’s work in the prison system was formally acknowledged
and she was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. She travelled to the United
States, Canada and England to research and participate in programs
relating to prisoners and their children. The focus of her Churchill
study was to investigate and participate in programs that encouraged
pro-social behaviour both with prisoners and their families.
Since returning to Melbourne, Judith has directed energy into having
prisoners’ families, particularly the children, recognised as
often invisible victims of crime and having services resourced appropriately
to address their needs.
